Could someone please explain what exactly the Berta Hummels are? I never heard this name before, only M. I. Hummel. Confused.

Thanks in advance.

While I am not sure if the term 'Berta Hummels' has some other specific meaning to Hummel collectors, here is what I can tell you about the Berta vs. M.I.Hummel names: In 1935 the German porcelain factory W. Goebel Porzelanfabrik began producing 'Hummel' figurines, so-named as these figurines were designed from the drawings of Berta Hummel who was a Franciscan nun called M. Innocentia, from which the 'M.I.' in the M.I.Hummel comes from. Berta Hummel passed on in 1946. The factory is still producing Hummels based upon her work. Hope this helps - phr
