I could really use the expertise of the people on this list.

Does any one know of museums that have:

1) an exhibit that uses a game or game board theme

and/or

2) open storage of collections, or have done interesting or unusual things with their collections. (The Naturalist Center would be one example.)

The Museum of Science, Boston is developing an exhibit on classification (cultural and scientific) that would use both these concepts and we would like to visit museums that have done similar things.

Thanks Carolyn Kirdahy, Curator of Objects

We have open storage on the first floor of the anthro museum here at Beloit College. The Logan Museum of Anthropology reopened in the spring of '95 with an entirely new focus, which included exhibiting a larger amount of objects and changing from diorama-focused exhibits to those with a (re)focusing on the object and the textual information. I think this works in this instance because we are a museum connected to a college, with a great emphasis on research. I know that some people really enjoy this opportunity to see so much more of the collection at one time, but also that some visitors don't feel like the open storage gives the opportunity for enough text information or the ability to put the objects in their proper context. Overall, though, the reaction has been favorable.

If you plan on coming to the midwest anytime soon, Beloit College is located right on the Wisconsin/Illinois border, about an hour NW of Chicago. I hope this helps.

The National Museums of Scotland did a great exhibition on the Lewis chesspieces in 1995, bringing together items to Scotland for the first time in 80 years, and complete with a great CD
