Hello,

I'm looking for some help identifying some dishes that I bought at an auction. The dishes are ceramic, and odd shaped. All of the plates (dinner, bread, saucers) and bowls are slightly off kilter. One side is raised slighly higher than the other and they sit slightly off center. Additional bowls (soup(?) and serving) as well as the meat platter are tear dropped shaped. They have a flanged edge that can be held onto in the smaller bowls. The dishes are in four colors: rust, pumpkin, tan and muddy blue. They have no markings on them at all. I do think that they are older - some of them have slight crazing.

I'm really curious as to what they are. I have seen the Roseville Raymore dishes and these remind me of them (although I pretty certain thats not what they are).

If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear from you. Please e-mail

newsgroup.

Thanks

Liane, I don't think they're Roseville - the colors don't relate to what was produced in the Raymor line (at least per my references.) I also thought that these could be something produced on Franciscan's 'eclipse' shape, but those items were always marked. The colors you report seem to be the 1970s 'decorator colors' (when pumpkin/orange, rust and tan were high-fashion.) Not sure about that 'muddy blue', though.

Anyone else?

I'm pretty sure your items are Eva Zeisel designs. One of her designs was slightly askew and, when using these dishes, you kind of feel like you are dining on a boat even though you are on dry land. Her items are HOT even though a lot of people are not aware of them. Martha Stewart did an article on Zeisal items not too long ago. She came to the U.S. in 1933 and designed dinnerware lines for Castleton (for whom she did a Museum line with some sort of affiliiation with the Museum of Modern Art), Sears, Red Wing, Hall (under Hallcraft), Western Stoneware and possibly others. Your specific items may be Town and Country by Red Wing - designed in 1946. Carol F.

Carole,

Thanks for the information. I do remember that article. I went back to see if I had pulled it out of the magazine (I do that Alot!), but I hadn't. If I remember correctly, the salt and pepper shakers that she did were shaped like gourds with long necks. I have one of them. I fogot to mention that in my first mail. I need to go to the library to see if I can find the article.

Thanks for the information!!

Liane
