I am seeking assistance . . .

I am very into antique furniture and furnishings but an currently in the process of redesigning our living space to incorporate a more nautical/coastal theme. Does anyone have suggestions of either antiques I can add and/or ways I can incorporate this new style with my current oak and walnut antique pieces?

looking forward to your responses . . .

Kitty

I am in the ptocess of gathering items to make a shadow box for a friend to put in the room of her hot tub - this may work for you depending on the age antiques your interested in and the style you wish to follow. We are doing a series of frames all centered around the main, largest one cotaining one of the first modern-type, black, Jantzen bathing suits. Other boxes will contian vintage sun glasses; bathing caps (all colors); Fla type souveniers-old shell animals, paperweights, etc.; and one with old seashell jewelry. I have had no trouble picking these things up at local (IND) garages sales for under $1 per item. This could blend with your current furn. or go with old wicker. This idea could be done with fishing equip., boating, etc. if you want a more rustic feel. Furniture - old crates with a glass top for a table, chairs-old camping stuff-boat seats(I'm really reaching!) More elegant? Look in books on Victorian for how they decorated Solariums, greenhouses and summer cottages. A picture book on the Thomas Edison house in Ft Meyers FLA would help- its beautiful and old and very Florida-ish?! ( find one of those old collections in glass cases - butterflies, shells, etc. ) Hit the garage sales, flea markets, auctions - look around for a main piece you really like (thats how we got started with the bathing suit) then -let your imagination run wild - have fun - not stress- the only ones who have to like it are those living with it! What comes to mind is brass, lots of brass. Brass fitting from ships, diving helmets, etc. This can run into some big money, but it's certainly nautical.

Another idea, for something to hang on the walls, a tasteful vignette-style frame with some early beach resort postcards showing sailing ships and early beach amusement parks. Some are quite detailed and lovely, and some are very colorful.

That's all that popped into my head. Have fun with it!

Clocks in porthole fittings are also elegant and evocative.

If you have a more casual area, I have seen in several of the how-to books I have from the 1890's-1920's directions on how to create the extremely trendy rowboat-bookshelf. Cut a wooden rowboat in half, add shelves, and you have a lovely place to display the seashells and driftwood you've picked up, or so says the GirlScout manual of the time.
