As you have all been sitting on the edge of your keyboards and losing vast amounts of sleep over the metalware items I was quizzing about (haha) here are the answers...especailly as all my ebay bookmarks no longer work and I can't post the piccies here now, anyway!!

Misdescribed item : 'Metal stool' = Late 18thC Brass and steel footman used by the fire for standing hot items on. The owner tells me it would cost $70 air or $35 land to post so I won't go for it. However, a good specimen can get around 120+ukp ($180) in a posh shop.

Hidden goody: Very nice ornate brass candle box, with farm/cow on backplate. (described as 'earley' sic..if you search for it) Looks right inthe picture. If so...$300+ ?? (Jane?)

Over priced: Brass plaque with Marie Antoinette on described as 18thC starting at $250 (actually Edwardian or later worth $2.50 max)

Jon

Hi Jon,

This one looks rather nineteenth century to me, but nice nonetheless. Your pricing does not sit at all well with my theory that most traditional antiques are cheaper in Australia. I paid about 500 AUD (206 GBP, 330 USD) for one a few months ago at auction here in Melbourne and the underbidder was another dealer. It was nicer (and earlier) than the footman on eBay with a wonderfully ornate pierced frieze, excellent patina, and iron cabriole legs at the front, but there still seems to be a big discrepancy in prices.

I'm going to pike on this one. I'd have to see it close-up before I'd be prepared to take a punt.

Cheers,

Jane

However, nonetheless.

many footmen styles in reference books. I haven't checked this one out yet but started at 1830 ish and then worked back to 1790's.

I always sold at much less than some metal dealers - hence I kept 'Key Antiques' at Chipping Norton in business 8)....but I have never paid more than 100ukp for a footman. I prefer the early iron ones, then all steel, then brass and iron, and finally all brass. I bought a great one last Christmas, early pierced iron with a central heart motif, in a shop for 60 ukp. They are still fairly common and not great (grate..ugh) sellers. I have seen examples UNSOLD in shops for 300 ukp, but I never got more than 180ukp for any type. I'd be prepared to take a punt.

smelling it!...I have not managed to get the picture up again...but the wear on the front decoration looked good and I had a 'right' feeling about it. If it were good, how would you price this (buy and sell?) Jon
