Colchester?

Hi- There are several references to Nathaniel Hedge, Colchester, in the standard old clock reference, 'Britten's (now Bailie) Old Clocks and Watches'. There is a Sr and Jr which will add to the confusion, but for now let's just deal with the name. He is listed as 'Lantern { my note-a style of clock, not implying that they were lit} clocks, about 1740; a fine long-case clock, about 1780. Then Jr From 1765-90.Watches. Also, mention of Hedge & Banister: Known as makers of long-case and other clocks, about 1800; watch by them, 1808. {Britten/Bailie weren't very chatty} first edition about 1894.

There are 3 plates of his clocks in 'Eric Bruton-The Longcase Clock' first published 1964- very handsome, not overdone, cases. Looks like a top quality sort. Since you didn't indicate what information you needed, my suggested next stop would be the British Watch & Clockmakers Guild- where he was surely a member, 01621-783104 or the British Horological Institute e-mail

I'm sure you will find several examples of his work in The British Museum and elsewhere. Now, in return, how about telling us what prompted your interest?- did you inherit one of his works, or buy it at an estate sale for 50 quid? Given the 5+ hours difference between your post (actually showed Thursday 12/11 and the local EST here was about midnight- I'm guessing that you are somewhere in the UK-or your internal PC clock is way off) Inquiring minds want to know.

This isn't exactly someone wandering into a pawn shop with the missing Strad, but it got my attention.
