Hi

On a quick search in Altavista I got this:

'Codswallop origin:

Codd was a Victorian businessman and wallop was nineteenth century slang for beer. In 1872 Hiram Codd went into business selling lemonade in green bottles sealed with a marble stopper. Beer drinkers thought little of this new drink and gave it the derisory nick-name Codswallop.'

With all due respect, Jon, I did already point out that 'wallop' was slang for beer or any alcoholic drink. I also suggested this was rather like 'the Dog's Bollocks' in respect to the contents, the codswallop inside, rather than the method employed to open the thing. I still fail to see the connection of 'wallop' as in 'hit hard - a heavy blow; a thump' a Codd bottle wallop opener.

I will admit that the term, 'it packs a wallop' can refer to the strength, usually in terms of an alcoholic drink.

I suggest you forward the Altavista reference to the OED editors as they list codswallop as .... 20th c origin. unknown.

It's a bit like that old BBC2 programme .. 'Call my Bluff' .. I'll be, Paddy what's-its-name, you can be the other bloke. ;>))

of (Codd) bottle opener before (as scanned), which you put over the bottle and then whack down to shift the marble? The wooden ones are pretty rare, but there are still zillions of glass ones around.

I thay, Ronnie old chap, iss my bow tie on thraight?

Yes, the bottle boys here include such things in their stock. I have no idea as to their rarity or value, however, Codd bottles are not something one would actually die for. ;>

Out of interest, approx two miles from where I live, there once was a tip, dates late last century closed, I believe in the late/mid 1950s. This tip was along the lough shore (sea) today the sea still washes bottles, crocks, jam pots, creams, pot lids etc, etc down towards the marshes, at low tide it is a simple matter of going to the shore line and taking your pick. ALAS, must of the stuff is broken or so badly iridescent to be totally worthless, and even worse, sometime in the 70s the council land-filled and planted over the original tip. God knows what they buried. Best so far has been a number of jam-pots, fig syrup bottles and a few poisons ... no wallop openers so far. ;>(

Both 'em wore bow-ties, this is bugging me! ... Paddy ??? what was his name?? .... and the other bloke, the one with the lisp?? ... Laurie can be Robbie Robinson. HEY!! what was their names? ... HEEELP.
