The Outagamie Museum is developing an exhibit about hairstyles in the United States during the 20th century. The basic concept is that styles are a means of self-expression (e.g. conformity, rebellion, independence, sophistication, etc.), and that various events and influences have changed the way that we have expressed certain messages. We intend for this exhibit to be fun and light-hearted, but grounded in solid information.

Has anyone ever seen, heard of, or presented anything like this? If so, please respond off-list with any ideas, suggestions, or resources to

Meg Ehr Curator Outagamie Museum and Houdini Historical Center 330 E. College Ave. Appleton, WI 54911 (920) 735-9370 x105

No, I don't *need* help from members of the list, but as many listers have done before, I thought it would be wise to see if anyone had any ideas we had not considered yet. Last I checked, that was still allowed...

Dear Meg: Photographer Bill Gaskins recently lectured at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on his writings and art, including his book project 'Good and Bad Hair,' which is currently on exhibition at the Society for Contemporary

was published by Rutgers University Press, 1997.

Bill Gaskins can be reached through the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, (816) 235-1501.

You might also try contacting Helen Shoemaker, a Ph.D. student in the American Studies department at the University of Kansas, who is writing her dissertation on hairstyles. Sorry I don't have her contact info., but I will try forwarding your message to her through the grapevine.

Good luck! James Martin Curatorial Assistant/Education Specialist The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Richard Corson, author of 'Fashions in Eyeglasses from the 14th Century to the Present Day' (Peter Owens, London) also wrote (I am told) a book on hair. The spectacles book is a wonderful resource.

I think that was in Texas (of course! if it's big it must be Texas!). I read about it in Vogue a few years ago. I believe the Big Hair festival has a website, (doesn't everything nowdays?), I remember stumbling across something like that one afternoon not long ago. I'm not sure if big hair is quite what the person from Outgamie is looking for but it just might be a lot of fun! best, April Genung 'Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be uesful, or believe to be beautiful' - William Morris

I recall reading about a town in the US that holds an annual Big Hair Festival. The article was in UK Marie Claire last year or the year before. Sorry that's not a lot of help, but perhaps another list-ee has heard of this event? Tracy Sibson Curator of Art Collections, Waikato Museum of Art and History 0064 7 8386563
