I would like to say we do exist. We are a mixed group as any.

When I opened my first shop, I bought a royal doulton cheshire cat (from the alicein wonderland series), and showed it to a collector who told me 'most rd cats are worth $35 to $50, and would I take $40 for it (which I did) only to have a friend of her's tell me she was bragging that she ripped the new guy off because it booked for several hundred dollars.

AND THE BEST<<<a nice looking well dressed couple-mid-50's came into my auction hall about an hour before preview was advertised for, and she distracted my by showing me some gold, while he walked out with a bronze the consignor had a $300 reserve on ( and yes, I paid my consignor, and told him the truth about what had happened)

Am I to believe that all collectors will lie to me about values(which I realize now that I should have reasearched before selling), or that all collectors would steal from me

Why didn't you auction it?

The WORST offenders and thieves (in my experience) are (in sequence): 1 - Little old ladies 2 - Nicely dressed middle-aged couples

The old 'don't look guilty' trick.

Yup.

My clergy DID do what Jim and Tammy did (they didn't steal money, but they had affairs with parishioners and switched mates.)

BUT....I've run into fair/honest auctioneers, and ones I'll never do business with again. Same as with anything else.
