I am a MA student currently working on my disseration. The topic of my thesis is a volunteer life brigade museum off the coast of England. The museum is suffering because it is a secondary function to the Brigade's main purpose, that is, lifesaving. I am interested in finding information about other organisations, life saving, maritime or otherwise, who share a similar dilemma, that is, that the museum takes the back seat to their primary function. I am particularly interested in volunteer organisations. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Please send replies to the following addresses:

Thank you!

Dear Jennifer

There are many examples of museums in the conditions You describe. Just some of my country:

The Swiss Jazz Museum, an institution of a national society of jazz. (Address: Stollenrain 10, CH - 4144 Arlesheim).

And a case similar to yours: The Museum of the fire brigade of the city of Basle (CH - 4003 Basel).

The Swiss Alpine Museum (CH - 3005 Berne) depends, partially, of the Swiss Alpen Club.

A frequent type of dependent museums are the treasure museums in the administration of local church communities. Sometimes they have very precious, old objects, but often they dont respond entirely to the common museums definition. I have dealt with this problem in my recent museums study thesis, specially with the question wether the objects of these museums are looked at first as religious (may be sacred) things or as museums objects. To special occasions some of them are taken out of the museums vitrines and used in the liturgical sense, coming back soon to be presented to tourists as cultural artifacts. I would like very much to receive comments to this question or some indications of other church / dome museums.

Yours
