Can anybody please help to Identify and value a Long case clock that we have just Inherited .

It measures eight feet tall, is constructed of veneered mahogany we think, there is a name on the clock mechanism 'W Francis Birmingham'

The face of the clock is white and the surround has four hand painted figures and there is another face above with paintings of a ship and other items and a face like the moon .

Your help would be much appreciated

If this has been covered before, I apologize for asking. Let me know which thread or when and I'll go look it up. My question:

What is the difference between a long case clock and a grandfather clock?

Hi Steve,

<snip> <snip>

W Francis is known to have made clocks in Birmingham around the 1740 period. He is listed in Baille's Clock and watchmakers of the world.

I really don't want to get involved in the ( not quite a flame, perhaps an ember) discussion except to give a bit of advice concerning 'old' Grandfather Clocks. A clock that is 150 years old may have had the movement replaced 75 years ago. The clockmaker may or may not have signed the movement. Many of them bought movements and dials and made their own cases. Some made movements and bought the cases.Dial making was a craft in itself. Some people buy several old clocks and make one out of it. Try to get the complete history of a clock before you make a large offer on it. Would you recognize a replacement dial that had been installed in 1880 ?

Excuse me, Dave, are you responding to me or just making a generally observation?

Ronnie,

Just general. I responded to your post as the original has expired off my server.

Just some things for GF clock buyers to be aware of.
