I acquired two pieces over the weekend and can't find any info on them in any of my books. Hope someone out there can help me.

The first is a silver plate, footed, cream jug. It has gold beading around the front and rear of the rim. There's also some shell and floral chasing on the sides of the rim. The feet have floral chasing on them. The only mark on the bottom is a five pointed star lying on a spider web. In the middle os the star is the plain letter W. Below this design is the number 60. Any help with dating this piece along with info on the manufacturer would be much appreciated.

The second piece is very dirty and tarnished. Alot of the silver plate is missing and the 'brown' of the underlying metal is showing. The piece resembles a tall narrow covered tankard(13'h) with a spout which may or may not have been added later. The mark on the bottom of this one says 'Rogers, Smith & Co.', 'New Haven, CT'. There is also 'No. 12' below the manufacturers name.

I really appreciate anyones help with these two pieces. Thanks and have a Great Thanksgiving. Barry

The first is by E. G. Webster Company founded in 1859 if memory serves. They were noted for their plate holloware, generally patterned after English originals and with much chasing. The second was a company formed by Wm Rogers, Sr. and George Smith in 1857. Although the name was used for years, the company was sold to the Meridian Company in 1862 and ceased to exist as a seperate entity. They made everything under the sun, generally in rather bad taste. I don't collect this sort of thing and so only have bits and pieces of informaton acquired in passing, but I'm sure someone out there can give you additional history and pattern details. Yours,

Wm Voss

the second piece may be an ice water pitcher, if it is of doublewall construction. otherwise, maybe part of a communion set...depends where the spout is attached
