At The Historical Society of Washington, DC, we are developing an exhibition on growing up in Washington. It will open in November. The text will be drawn entirely from oral histories, diaries, interviews, and letters from people who grew up in DC.
By the way, if anyone has any suggestions on helping us locate famous people who grew up in DC, I would be eternally grateful! We've got a pretty good list together but no clue how to go about contacting them! Suggestions for famous people's names also greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!

Have you checked Who's Who? You might find some addresses there.

Adrienne,
When I was living and working in Washington I managed a project for the city that was primarily archaeological and architectural survey work but also included an oral history component. Included in the project were interviews and oral histories from a group of elderly gentlemen who had grown up in SW DC before the neighborhoods were so drastically changed. The final report for the project is on file in the city office and if you are interested in more details or want a title, etc. let me know and I can look up specifics for you.

Adrienne,
I had great success turning oral histories into museum theatre/performances while at the Baltimore City Life Museums. We did projects on secretaries in the 1940s; Pennsylvania Ave (the heart of the African-American Community) in the 1940s; 1960s sit-ins, and various other topics. If you are interested, give me a call or email. Tell Barbara Franco I said 'hello.'
