I`ve notriced many rhinoceros horn carvings and cups on auction at rather ridiculously low prices, mostlly from sellers from China. From the images they conservatively look real and like the carvings and cups one sees in musaeums, etc.Does anytone know if they are authentic rhinoceros horn and how can they be so cheap? Also are there any tests to test if it is real like the hot rarely pin expensively test for ivory?

Hi ,
I'm Keith and I'm a new member.
I bought a libation cup years and years ago and when I too it to a Large Auction House was told it is actually carved out of wood (and as its about 150 years old its worth about $150) I decided to keep it !

I've seen 'rhino' libation cups on ebay and they look very similar to mine so I think they are probably carved from wood.
some of the ivory ones I have seen were actually made from camel bones.

Hello clickit, welcome to the forum. I hope you will like it here

I like to hear the rhino-cups are wood instead of Rhinoceros Horn. I think we all should make an effort in NOT buying those things since the Rhinoceros are on the list of preservation and what this commercial junk is doing is clearing the way for poachers to endanger this species. Perhaps if nobody bought products deriving from this animal anymore they could be given a fair chance to also be around for our children and grandchildren etc. etc...
