Hi. I've got a metal desk that I'd like to refinish. It has two coats of paint over the original gray finish, and the hard rubber (linoleum?) top is serviceable, but ugly. I'd like to take the paint off and give the metal surface a 'satin' finish, ie., polished but not too shiny, followed by clear coat for protection and effect.

I've seen these with the top replaced with leather, but I've got some old maps that might look good underneath a sheet of glass.

It's also missing a typing shelf. The manufacturer is All Steel Equipment in Aurora, Illinois, but they seem to be out of business. The phone number on the sticker is 15-642, when did the phone companies stop using 5 digit numbers?

Any advice, ideas, etc. I could get on this project would be mucho appreciated! I'm mostly interested in the best way to go about finishing the metal.

Kevin

This comes with a grain of salt.

Many years ago, while in the USAF, we decided to have the same type of desk repainted. What we found out was, the desk were made at the end of WWII, between 1945 & 1955. Along the front bottom edge (the side not sat at) check to see if it has be rounded or square. The earlier desks had the rounded edge
