I just came across what is obviously a salesmans demo copy of a book called Sunshine and shadow in new york. The book has spine and cover designs glued on the inside of the boards, the first half of the book is selections from chapters and illustrations and the last half is an advertisment fro the book followed by an area to list new subcribers their addresses and what style of binding they want. The book it self is not sold for much money these days. Anyone know if there`s a market for this sort of thing?

collection of these salesman`s samples. Whether it`s worth much or not, I don`t know, but if they don`t have another copy (and I don`t see one in their catalog), I dare say they`d be interested. http://www.americanantiquarian.org
They collect American imprints through 1876 (and of course secondary materials about that period). Special interest in (among other things) the history of printing and publishing.

when they were viewed as no better than old family Bibles or Reader`s Digest Condensed Books.
The biggest collection of sample books, formed by Robert Seymour and Michael Zinman, is now at the Van Pelt Library at Penn:
The Zinman collection was catalogued in:
Keith Arbour, *Canvassing Books, Sample Books, and Subscription Publishers` Ephemera, 1833-1951, in the Collection of Michael Zinman* (1996)--see a review of Arbour at:
There are three entries for your title in Arbour: 1472-74.
The AAS`s sample book page is interesting as well:
I also just purchased a sample book for *Beautiful Pearls of Catholic Truth*, not in Arbour and a book I am not otherwise familiar with, but the description of the sample book was just too intriguing and the price was right. I`ve very eager to get a look at it.
