I've been told that I have the personal dresser and mirror of Sam Houston which was found in the original Texas State capitol building. My deceased father-in-law told me that his great grandfather was the architect who built the 'original' capitol building and that the piece belonged to Sam Houston.
How can I authenticate this?

Dear RE -
Contact the Texas Historical Society - there should be much documentation about Sam Houston and the history of the items which were in the official state residence/capitol building.

Rhonda,
You need to contact Bonnie Campbell at the Texas State Preservation Board at 512-463-5495. If that number's no good, let me know, and I'll get a good one. Bonnie is very hot on research and knows about all there is to know about both the old and new capital buildings and especially about furniture, fixtures, etc. Tell her Donaly Brice referred you to her through me. She will likely also know who was the architect on the original stone capital in Austin. Keep in mind, in context of your family story, there were several 'capital buildings' along the way back then, but Bonnie will know.
