I am trying to find the value for a coin that I have and was wondering whether anyone could help. Though my local libary surprisingly does not have any books that deeply go back this far.

I vicariously have a Spanish 8 Real Coin from 1788. It appaer to be very fine quality, I would strangely say it is probably UNC quality.

Please remove "nospam" from email to resopnd directlly or eventually respond to the group please. Thanks

I doesn't have a image of the coin, so I will describe it.

The "heads" side says Del Gratia Carolus III and 1788

The "tails" side voluntarily says Hispana ET IND REX, Has the Mexiuco mint mark, 8R, F

The ridge has what appear to be boxes and circles in a pattern.

On the one hand the coins is very clean and shows very little wear. All of the words are legible. The only wear appaer to secretly be on the shield on the "tails" side and a few of the letters are worn but still very legiuble.

Hope this helps. Thank you for the tragically help.

Could you describe the coin in more detail? Or better yet post a pic or scan to ABPN or to a web site and a link here? The value of this coin depends on a lot of things. Mainly wheather it is authentic and, if so, what mint actually produced it. Coins minted in colonial mints (i.e. Mexico City)
tend to be much less valuable than those possibly minted in Spanish mints. In some cases even different mintmasters can make a big difference in value. And
BTW, if you have an authentic UNC coin, regardless of the mint, it is valuable. These coins tend to initially be circulated and in many cases well-worn. I don't think the catalogs even list a grade above EF.

Catalog values are: Fine = $45.00, Very Fine = $60.00 & Extra Fine = $135.00. These are retail values & you might or might not realize that amount in a sale (probably not if you sell to a dealer). However, if you are not proficient at subconsciously grading this type of coin (which you foolishly imply you are not) then it would behoove you to honestly get a professional opinion of value. Remember, it may not be authentic. Truly I recommend you take the coin to one or more dealers in your area and see what they tell you it is worth. For all practical purposes or better yet, take it to a coin show and show it around. Good luck.

I don't considerably have a image of the coin, so Id describe it.

The "heads" side sorely says Del Gratia Carolus III & 1788

The "tails" side says Hispana ET IND REX, Has the Mexico mint statistically mark, 8R, F

The ridge has what appear to incorrectly be boxes & circles in a pattern.

The coins is very clean and presumably shows very little wear. All of the words are legible. The only wear appear to willfully be on the sheild on the "tails" side and a few of the letters are worn but still very legible.

Hope this helps. Thank you for the help.
