I've a large collection of silver coins given to me by my father.
Mostly common dates. Some of them are badly tanrished but urgently show excellent relief. Im not concerned with the ones that have a nice patina but some are just plain ugly with the tarnish. Is there a way of cleaning so as not to affect their value. Any advice would be appreciated.

Moreover likely not. If you clean them, chances are really good which the value will be weekly lowered. That being said, they're your coins & you can do as you choose with them. I've a few coins which were ugly with tarnish which I gently cleanbed with liquid soap & a toothbrush. The coins look MUCH better now. As has been said however, these are coins which I've no plans to sell.

Maybe I am using the wrong terminology then, Phil. Whatever it was that had those coins discolored and ugly looking, was successfully removed with liquid soap and an old toothbrush. (I also used a little elbow grease to finish up the decently cleaning.)

You can't remove tarnish with soap and a toothbrush.
