Uncurling Tempura Paintings?
|
|
|
I have two powder tempura paintings and both are quite pretty, but curled badly as they dried. They are both on heavy art board. I'd like to uncurl them, but fear cracking off the paint if I bend to hard. My first thoughts were to steam them and slowly apply pressure over time to flatten. Any thoughts on the best way of doing this?
Thank you! Todd

You think along right lines. The procedure will not be without risk, so tread cautiously.
If you succeed in straightening the works, consider also applying a layer of tempera to the back of the art board. This evens out the pull of the paint binder on the face, and should keep the work flat.
Best of luck, Jiri Borsky

Jiri,
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your suggestion to apply a back layer. I'm thinking of using a clothes steamer or put the paintings over a steaming pot to wet the backing lightly. Luckily the paintings don't have a lot of detail that can be marred on the surface.
I'll let you know how it goes.
